dog or wolf howling with large moon behind

Stephan Anstey

i wanted to explain to you
that you are wrong
about a few things

first, i am not morbid
or fixated on death
i am rejoicing for my own life
and yours, too

i remember watching a dog bark
at the moon for an hour or two
and when it stopped
nothing had changed

i wanted to explain to you
that a man is not a dog
or a monkey or the moon

when we bark, or bite, or shine
there is meaning,
and meaning changes everything

i wanted to, but i won't
because you already know
i'm a damned fool
