Car driving a curving road in Winter, Estes National Park

Adam Coffey

January roads at night, safe from the cold
The sound of the CD that never gets old
I should make peace even if I still believe
Or even if I just want to

I seek wisdom to soothe my heart
“Sometimes people just grow apart”
You ask me if we can finally rest
I smile and say we’re at our best

I’ll never admit, nor you of course
The truth is, things have never been worse

We settle for a new attempt
Always agree, with no contempt

You were never perfect, you nor I
Life wasn’t perfect, I will not lie
But God was it close, far more room to worsen
So happy, existing, with you as my person

Just know in time, we’ll work it out
We’ve survived an age of dread and doubt
Your gaze, empty eyes and weakened sorrow
“Do you really think there will be a tomorrow?”
