Laundry Pantoum

By El Engerman

The sun rises over piles of dirty clothes
Horrid things hide beneath, rotting away
Days stack on top of me as I decompose
Yesterday’s to-dos have become today’s

Horrid things hide beneath, rotting away
The load of laundry in the washer haunts my mind
Yesterday’s to-dos have become today’s
Run the cycle again, I’ll remember this time

The load of laundry in the washer haunts my mind
Pulling on the edge of my consciousness, violent
Run the cycle again, I’ll remember this time
Under static, the alarm rings silent

Pulling on the edge of my consciousness, violent
I’ve forgotten something again and again
Under static, the alarm rings silent
Time and soap and water circle the drain

I’ve forgotten something again and again
The sun rises over piles of dirty clothes
Time and soap and water circle the drain
Days stack on top of me as I decompose
