Advantages of Being a Woman Artist and Not Publishing

Inspired by Guerrilla Girls’ “conscience of the art world”

By A. T. Halaby

“working without the pressure of success”

not having to sit for your artist photo

being left out of history books

living without the fear of someone going through your stuff when you die

not having to distinguish between career, motherhood, womanhood, womanwhateverWH(mother)AT(woman)EV(hood)ER

not being criticized for only mastering one art form in your lifetime if you kill yourself

living without the fear that your diary is safe where you keep it

having a place for yourself that no one else knows about

most OkCupid users will blush when they read about your work in your hobbies section and admire you for your bold artistic decision

not ever having to deal with that anticipated conversation topic of, “…so…how much of the real you is present in this piece? if you ask me—”

being able to experiment with any form you want and not be criticized for your exploration because you aren’t a master

a variation on a theme: no one will ever find me or it’s better to be lost than found or this must be the place or I know where I’m supposed to be or there is no appearance to success, I live on
